Vacuum box testing is a non-destructive examination used when trying to locate weld seam leaks. A vacuum box and a compressor create a high or low pressure vacuum while a detergent solution is applied to the test area. The detergent bubbles, making leaks visible within the created pressure envelope.

The Vacuum Decay leak testing method detects leaks in nonporous, rigid, or flexible packages nondestructively. The test starts by placing a sample in a closely fitting evacuation test chamber equipped with an external vacuum source.

The test utilizes a box that has rubber seals around its open bottom and a plexiglass top cover. A soap-like solution is applied to the weld section to be inspected, and a light vacuum, typically under 69 kPa (10 psi), is then applied to the box. The presence of bubbles on the soaped weld indicates the location of a leak.
