Borescope Inspection

The Borescope Inspection is an essential tool for inspecting of power plant components. Commonly used in high-value rotating power-plant equipment such as steam turbines, gas turbines and generators it is also extremely useful for checking the internal or to reach external surfaces of boiler and HRSG tubes and piping.

The borescope inspection (also known as a “remote visual inspection” or RVI) involves using a flexible or rigid optical device that allow the inspector to examine areas that are otherwise difficult to access.

Early borescopes were a simple tube, whereas today even basic models are equipped with cameras (and usually) lighting at the end of the viewing probe. More expensive models include articulated heads and higher-quality optics.

The choice of hardware is to some extent dependent on the application, a lower-end scope without articulation is often sufficient for checking larger diameter pipes.

How Borescope Inspection Work

A Borescope Inspection is an optical tool used to view areas that would otherwise not be visible. A borescope is inserted into the item being evaluated without destroying the item of interest.

A Borescope can consist of:

  1. Rigid or flexible working length
  2. Light Source to illuminate the target under inspection.
  3. Optical system that may consist of a relay lens system, rod lens system, fiber optic image guide a CCD or CMOS camera.
  4. Eyepiece or Monitor to view the image

Applications:

Borescopes are used to non destructively inspect industrial systems and equipment for condition, manufactured parts for quality and security and law enforcement for contraband, intelligence and safety.

Common Inspections Include internal viewing of:

  1. Turbine Engines
  2. Internal Combustion Engines
  3. Pipes
  4. Heat exchanger tubes
  5. Gear boxes
  6. Welds
  7. Foreign Object Retrieval
  8. Cast Parts
  9. Manufactured or machined parts
